Old review of South Park and the Stick of Truth

First off, let me say – I absolutely HATE turn based games.  I find them too boring and have maybe lasted 10 minutes into a Final Fantasy game.  That being said – This game is AMAZING!

I have been a fan of South Park off and on since the beginning of the show, and as an avid gamer I’ve been waiting for a game that would do the show justice.  The Stick of Truth did that – no doubts.  You are a part of the South Park world immediately.  The character creation was beautiful – and I actually had to explain why you couldn’t choose to be a female “new kid” to my other half. (it’s south park — Cartman would never play with the girls willingly.)

The Story – For fans of the franchise the story definitely gives you what you want.  Great visual and verbal references to classic/favorite episodes show up everywhere.  The game truly feels like an interactive episode. Matt and Trey went for it with the raunchiness and it works into the game very well. There were times that I was caught off guard with how far they pushed it, but I can’t imagine it any other way.

Gameplay – As previously stated – I hate turn based games, but, somehow Stick of Truth had a way of not feeling like one.  The mix of the blocking and timing aspect really helped me get over the hurdle.  Maybe more turn based are like this and I just don’t know it? (currently watching my other half play the FFX-X2 games and I have no clue how that style of game play puts a game into someones top 5 favorites).  In Stick of Truth I had to be mindful of everything – I wasn’t just watching a villain power up and shoot me, I had to time my block and hope that Butters/Kenny/Stan/Cartman didn’t die that turn.

Leveling up is just as fun, however you don’t always realize that you unlocked a new move until you went into the menu or needed to do something else in your “facebook”. It was a nice surprise sometimes other times it was something I should have leveled a while ago and missed out on beating an enemy faster. (oh well, the ass kicking was still fun.)

The Look – Massive amounts of praise is needed for the design team on this game.  It has the iconic look and feel of South Park that I never imagined was possible to create. Even how the “new kid” moves when you hit that joystick the first time made you realize that this is the South Park game we’ve been waiting for.

Overall, I am very happy with the game.  I am on my second playthru because I enjoyed it so much.  The only negatives I have about this game are the frame rate issues when entering a new location and the shortness of the game. I am hoping to see some sort of DLC come to this game because it is a gem and I don’t want to get bored with it. I also hope that Matt and Trey didn’t hate the process so much that we won’t see another game like this one.

Score: 4.5/5  – That half was for the frame rate issues – if a patch comes out to fix that I’ll give it a 5.

If you’ve read my first post you know that I was happy.  I still am, to a point.

As of January 10th I was laid off from my job.  I was devastated.  I had finally gotten myself into a job that paid me extremely well that I, for the most part, enjoyed. Then, just like that it was gone. No warning, over 700 people lost their jobs that day.

Lucky for me, I have an amazing boyfriend who asked the most powerful question: “Do you want to go back to school?”

I’ve long wanted to go back to school but real life gets in the way.  I’m not some fresh out of high school kid without a care in the world.  I have a home to pay for, a car to pay for (and keep running), I need to eat, pay bills etc.  How on earth can I go back to school and survive?  It had terrified me to think about school. But, when my man asked that question I almost (I probably did, actually) cried!

A friend of mine had gone to the DAVE school a few years back and had recommended it to me. I finally looked into it and it blew my mind.  I told my boyfriend about it and he told me to go ahead and apply, we’d figure out the money part if I got in.  Well….. I GOT IN!  My portfolio was good enough.

And so, this blog is about to change.  Firstly, I’m actually going to POST things!  Shocking I know!  Second, I’m going to use this to update my progress in school.  I’m attending DAVE school for video game design.  I can’t wait to post my first projects for you all.  Classes start on April 7th and provided all my funding goes thru I’ll be on my way to a new career and an even better life!

Until next time

My Hello to my readers

My name is Kay.  I recently turned 30 and realized I wasn’t completely happy with how things were going for me personally.  Yes, I have found the man of my dreams. Yes, I have a good and reliable job. But, I found out that in finding a lot of good I let a lot of bad in as well.

My main issue is ME.  I’ve gained a lot of weight the past few years.  I smoke far too much, almost a pack a day now.  I haven’t been to a dentist or a doctor since I was under the age of 18.

So, for me this blog is mostly for me to share my transformation into the woman I know I can be. I also hope to post some fun reviews of films and video games.  I’m sure my cat’s will make a few appearances as well… they are my children after all.

That’s my intro I guess.  I’m starting P90x on August 1st. So until then I’m going to try to post about what got me to where I am, maybe a review or two. I guess we’ll all find out soon.

Later!

– K –
